The Circle Series

As you probably know, the third book in The Circle series is due to be released in e-format on December 26.

When I first wrote CIRCLE OF DESIRE with the passionate Olivia and reserved Collin as the main characters, I had already planned the next five-six books and their primary characters with a vague plot for each. Before DESIRE was published, I had already written a couple chapters of the second book (CIRCLE OF DANGER) and looked forward to seeing how Collin’s scarred brother, Ryker, would handle the newly liberated Marie and was certain the next couple would include the second in command to Ryker, Jack Drago. But my editor at the time loved Rex and Abby, and wanted their story next.

Actually, I planned for their story to be book number four but after DESIRE was published I read in several reviews how they were curious about six-five Rex and deadly Abby. So what the heck! CIRCLE OF DECEPTION became the next story and I was glad. All of it fell into place.

Though I rarely hear of authors doing this, when I’m between writing projects, I’ll pull out my books and re-read sections of them. Hey, I write books I would love to read. Makes sense to me.

Believe it or not, but I’m always surprised when I see where I've placed some foreshadowing in the previous book that I don’t remember. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with me already knowing the back story for each character. Maybe not the whole back story but enough that it helps flesh them out when I write their book.

Okay, now you’re asking, what happened to books four through six? The blurb for DECEPTION does say “Carla Swafford's erotic Circle series comes to an exhilarating finale as the team of sexy spies and assassins goes undercover-under the covers.”

The lovely thing about the new age of publishing is that authors have options for their books. I’ll let you know when more CIRCLE series are available. For now, I have a couple of other deadly series in mind, and like most authors, I can’t say much about them as I have no idea of when they’ll be written. Yes. I’m a tease.

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

Thanks to JB Lynn for asking me to be part of this blog hop. And thankfully this one has questions to answer. I will cheat a little by giving information on my soon to be released The Circle series book, CIRCLE OF DECEPTION, instead of my work-in-progress one. I hate to give out too much information on a book not sold. Too much can be changed about it, or it could not be sold, and I have no idea if or when I’ll have time to self-publish a book. So let’s dive in.

What is the working title of your book?

CIRCLE OF DECEPTION is the only one of the three that kept its original working title. CIRCLE OF DESIRE was originally titled by me as OUT OF THE SHADOWS and CIRCLE OF DANGER was IN THE SHADOWS. Though I will say that I had planned for the next book in this series, before it sold, would be BEYOND THE SHADOWS, but I had never attached it to DECEPTION. BEYOND was to be Jack’s story (he’s in DANGER as the lead male character’s second in command). Maybe in the future I’ll have time to write and self-publish his story along with a couple others.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

In the case of DECEPTION, it grew from the previous two books, DESIRE and DANGER. The Circle series itself came from my love of spy, mercenaries and assassin books and movies, such as James Bond (my favorite is anything Pierce Brosnan was in), the TV series from early 2000, La Femme Nikita, Linda Howard’s ALL THE QUEEN’S MEN, Shannon McKenna’s McCloud books and Anne Stuart’s ICE series.

What genre does your book fall under?

Avon lists it under erotic romantic suspense, though I see it in erotica categories on the book sites, it’s really not erotica. Yes. It’s hot but not to the extent of most erotica stories.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie?

The Rock with hair could play Rex and Jessica Alba as Abby. The reason I show The Rock with long and short hair is that it was past his broad shoulders in DESIRE and DANGER, but in DECEPTION he’d gone commando and cut it high and tight.

What is a one sentence synopsis of your book?

Two lovers must come to understand what happened in the past is unimportant when it comes being in love in the here and now.

Will your book be self published or represented by an agency?

This book was represented by an agency.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I wrote it on and off for six months.  Usually it takes me four months for first draft and one to two months to edit.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I guess the books I mentioned above under “where did the idea come from.” But I believe my books have their own feel to them.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

In this case, I’ll talk about what inspired me to write the series. At the time, I had finished four paranormal romances and two small town romantic suspense books. None were getting the attention from editors or agents that I hoped. I’d heard that vampire books weren’t selling and my small town books kept getting rejected, so I decided I needed to write something else. As writers, we’re told to write what you love to read. Well, that would’ve been paranormal romances, but since that market was saturated, I decided to write my next love: Spy books, especially like La Femme Nikita. Then the idea for CIRCLE OF DESIRE was born.

What else about your book might interest the reader?

There’s a scene in the book I wrote from personal experience. LOL!  I’m such a tease.

Mini Excerpt:    (Abby and Rex meet others before a dinner given by arms dealer, Brody.)

The first person to enter was the tall blonde with manufactured boobs Brody had brought to the cocktail party.

“You remember Greta. She was kind enough to play hostess for me tonight.” Brody pulled her into his arms and kissed her. No light peck on the lips for them, instead tongues thrust and parried into each other’s mouths, visible in flashes while Brody’s hand covered and squeezed a full breast.

Feeling a little uncomfortable with the reenactment from the other night, Abby glanced up at Rex. With a smirk on his face, he watched with interest. She jabbed him in the side. His grunt brought his attention to her. She jerked her head at the display and lifted her shoulders.

“Such a sweet candy cane. Always in season.” Brody chuckled as he pulled away. He then slapped her butt as she walked by barely acknowledging them with a nod as she lifted a glass of white and slunk over to the sectional.

Next, a beautiful man and woman glided in. They looked so much alike, they could’ve been related. Their long blonde, almost white hair ended at the small of their backs. Abby had never seen a man with hair that long and silky and smooth. The desire to touch it had her clutching her glass a little tighter. Their eyes were the lightest gray and like the color of snow at night with a full moon. The only difference between the two was what they wore. His pale blue jeans were topped with a regular white button up shirt, while the woman dressed in an ankle length white cotton dress that was so thin, Abby could see her small dark nipples underneath.

Okay. Talk about getting creepier by the minute.

“I would like to introduce the supreme artists of photography, Leif and Spring Erickson. Their pictures have been shown in the renowned Museum of Modern Art in New York City and so many galleries, they’re too numerous to count.” Brody leaned over and air-kissed their cheeks. “These are my dear friends, Rurik Volkov and his wife, Abby.”

“So nice to meet you.” The man had a slight lisp and the woman stared at Rex as if she wanted to eat him where he stood. What surprised Abby was how the man looked at Rex the same way. Oh, oh. The couple finally moved away with glasses of white wine—figured—over to the sofa to sit across from Greta.

The last couple to walk in looked like the average redneck and his barely clothed wife. His Dale Earnhardt Junior ball cap had sweat-stains around the brim and his wife’s visible stomach sported a red eighty-eight dangling from a loop in her belly button.

“So you two are Brody’s new friends.” He reached out his hand to Rex and started pumping. “I’m Bubba Hagley and this here is my wife, Kristy.”

Abby tilted her head as the men shook hands. The dark-headed man looked familiar to her for some reason. She’d never met a Bubba before and certainly not the one standing in front of her, but his dark eyes and the way he held himself reminded her of someone.

“So nice to meet you, sweet thang, and I hope to get to know you much better over the weekend.” Bubba’s grin warned he meant exactly what he was saying. Though he was handsome and a little thinner than she liked, his sable brown eyes pulled her in, encouraging her to trust him.

“Now, sugar, don’t let him frighten you. He’s a teddy bear and loves all women. He gets carried away at times.” His wife slapped his hand. That was when she realized he’d grabbed hers and held it tight.

“He doesn’t frighten me.” She tugged at her hand, and he continued to grin at her.

“Bubba, I’m Rurik. Her husband.” Rex pulled on her wrist.

Were they going to have a tug of war with her as the rope? Thankfully Bubba had the sense to let go.

With a crooked grin that Abby found interesting, Bubba chuckled as he released her and placed his arm over his wife’s bare shoulders and joined the others.

Thanks to JB Lynn for inviting me to be part of this Blog Hop. I was to tag five other authors, but there are so many Blog Hops (or the same one) going on, only two accepted. I’m betting you’ll enjoy their posts too.  They should show up next week, so be sure to come back and check it out.

Kicking Butt

Still writing on Book #3. It's more emotional than the other two books, but just as hot. No worries there. I love writing steamy, squeeze-your-thighs-together stories.
It appears that everyone enjoyed the excerpt from CIRCLE OF DESIRE the other day. so I thought I would share a little of CIRCLE OF DANGER coming out 6/5/12.

Marie knocked on the apartment door marked C13 and waited for an answer. Ryker hated it when she spent time with Charlie. Who did he think he was? Charlie wouldn’t get her in any more trouble than anyone else in the organization.
A woman with soft brown curls around her face peeked through the crack in the door as she opened it as far as the chain allowed. There was no crime in The Circle facility — who in their right mind would dare — but Charlie had grown up in the slums of Atlanta and refused to leave her safety up to chance.
“F*ck, Marie. You have some crazy timing.” Charlie, known as a wild woman, went through men as fast as gas through a four-fifty-four engine in a muscle car. Marie knew for sure that she had a heart of gold and was the bestest of friends.
            “I can come back later.”
“Sh*t, no. I forgot the time. Give me a second.” She slammed the door.
Marie grinned. Not offended by her friend’s behavior or language, she patiently waited. The deserted hallway was unusual. On most days the underground barracks for single Circle operatives were jam-packed with people coming from or going to their shifts. The same barracks she’d lived in until Ryker decided she needed to sleep near him. With that thought her skin prickled. She leaned against the wall and pressed a hot cheek to the cool sheetrock.
Then she heard voices inside Charlie’s rooms. One voice was much deeper than the other.
The door opened and a half clothed male stumbled into the hallway.
“Ah, damn, Charlie. I hoped to have another round of fun.” The man dropped his shoes and jabbed his arms into the sleeves of his shirt. With his tousled chestnut hair in his eyes and well-defined abs, Marie remembered seeing him working out in the gym. He was one of the pilots for The Circle’s helicopters.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Later, Tom. I’ll make it up to ya.” Charlie slid her hand down the man’s bare chest and grabbed the waistband of his jeans and jerked. “You better be ready to keep up.”
The man hissed. “Be careful. I’ll keep up all night, baby. You tell me when.”
She kissed him hard and then shoved him in the chest toward the stairwell.
Charlie turned toward Marie. “You look like crap. Come in and I’ll fix you a margarita.”
Marie watched Tom stagger away. Then she followed Charlie into her rooms.

I hope you enjoyed the little scene.  My plans were to have a novella for Charlie and her sweetie (not Tom). We'll see.

In the next couple weeks, I plan to send out a newsletter (I promise) and it will have the first scene from Book #3. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter.  Click here.
And yes, they told me recently they are planning to publish the third book in the series.  No word yet about any other books after that.

If you're enjoying the series, I suggest you tell others to buy my books (e-format or paperback). The more people who buy, the better chance they will want more. If you just share and let others illegally download the e-format, my publisher won't know and they will decide the series isn't doing well and not buy the others.  And unlike other authors, I prefer they be edited and distributed through a publisher.

Excerpt of CIRCLE OF DESIRE

I thought I would share an excerpt of CIRCLE OF DESIRE.

He turned on his back and placed his hands behind his head. Light bathed his whole body and he was obviously pleased by her attention. Long and firm, his c*ck stretched toward his belly button. Ripples of muscles led to a broad chest sparsely sprinkled with dark hair. With his arms up, biceps bulged and showcased his masculinity even more. She could sit there all day and stare at him, but he had some explaining to do.

“What was the real reason you had me kill Jason?”

iBookstore

I mentioned this on Facebook and Twitter and totally missed it here. But a couple weeks ago, Circle of Desire was #2 on iBookstore's Romance Erotica. Isn't that cool?  It's staying in the top 10 (updated daily or hourly, not sure) most of the time and today around 6 p.m. was in number 10.

It's been so much fun looking at the list every day. Friday, I noticed that the sub-category Erotica had been dropped off the "MORE ROMANCE" title. WHAT! So I've sent an email to iTunes. We'll see if they even fix it. So if you type in Erotica Romance (in the search location), it goes to mostly the regular erotica. Yes, there is a difference. Big time difference. So frustrating.

So the only way I've found to get that spot is to type in my name in the search location. Click on Circle of Desire and then at the top left, click on Erotica (shows as Books > Romance > Erotica > Carla Swafford).  Then the bestseller list is on the right.

For prosperity, I 'snipped' the website so I can keep it, plus show you.  This is from January 11, 2012, when Circle of Desire was #2.

[Added 1/23/12: You can also go to my book by clicking Books, then $3.99 and less, and then click on Romance. I'm in that section (no "Top" chart) too!]
[Added 3/14/12:  Sad to say, as of the end of Janaury, iBooks dropped this category - not Erotica, but Erotica Romance. Circle of Desire is now under regular Romance, AVON IMPULSE, and $3.99.  Doesn't show up in Romantic Suspense and not even contemporary. And it's no longer on a top 10 chart. Geez! Nice while it lasted.]

Re-Run #6

This one was at a buddy's blog, Patricia Preston from October 23, 2011.

Thanks, Patricia, for asking me to post on your blog.  I’ve always loved hanging out with you.

If you were about to be served your last meal, what would be on your plate?

Re-Run #5

Here's one from October 18, 2011 that was at Reader Girls blog.

Thank you for asking me to visit your blog. I love seeing families reading together. My reading gene came from my dad and his dad. Then I passed it on to one of my daughters. We keep hoping to bring the college student into the fold once she graduates. Then again, she’s a professional student. So we have no idea when that will happen. She has promised to read my book. Isn’t that sweet? But we do plan to have a defibrillator nearby when she does. She’s destined to have a heart attack when she reads certain scenes in “Mom’s” book.

Your question to me was how does it feel to compete with established writers?

Re-Run #4

This one is from I Just Wanna Sit Here and Read blog, October 20, 2011. It was a lot of fun to write. Hope you enjoy it.

You’re living on the edge by allowing me free rein in deciding what to post. But I’ll behave and do what I love to do more often than I like to admit. Make up lists. Yes. My OCD is showing. To make it a little less dry, I’ve decided to let my two main characters in Circle of Desire, Olivia St. Vincent and Collin Ryker, help out.

Re-Run #3

Continuing my revisit to blog posts that I made on blog tours, here's the one from The Heart of the Dragon Den, October 20, 2011.

Tell us a bit about yourself (50 words or less).  It’s no surprise that I love to write as I grew up with a dad who loved to entertain us with stories about his youth in a long ago era of lonely two lane highways and strong men protecting their families. With that rich history, I turned to writing romance.

Re-Run #2

This post was at Black Seductions on October 19, 2011.  What I especially loved about this interview was the comments I received. Lots of them and some really interesting answers. Go and check them out. Oh, before I forget, some of the sites I'm sending you to are for people 18 and older. So if you're at work looking at them, be sure no one is around as they often have book covers that make mine look tame.

I deleted the blurb of the book, but the rest of the post is here. Be sure to FOLLOW them on Twitter: @BVSBooks .

Thank you for inviting me to your blog. Like most authors, I enjoy talking about my books and love the opportunity.

You had asked, “What steps did I take to make my heroine someone the reader would like?”

Re-Runs of My Favorites

I've been doing the blog tour thang on and off since October. Mostly off than on, but I've enjoyed every stop, some more than others. One thing about blogging elsewhere, even though I place a link here, people forget or blogs die or whatever. So I decided to repost them here. For the next few days you'll see them in full or partial and including links back to the original blog/post.  But please comment here (better chance of me seeing it now).

Here's the first one at Among The Muses. (October 17, 2011.) A great interview/review website. And it's not just because they gave me such a good review or that I like the ladies who run it, but because the site is easy on the eyes and they keep it up. Gives you confidence in knowing that your work is respected when the site is professinal looking. Anyway, I always liked New Jersey people.

Oh, be sure to LIKE them on FacebookFOLLOW them on Twitter and FRIEND them on GoodReads.

What inspired you to write this book?
One of my all-time favorite TV series was Le Femme Nikita and my go-to-book of Linda Howard’s is ALL THE QUEEN’S MEN. Both deal with mercenaries, spies and assassins, and I find them fascinating. When I was writing the hero, Collin, for CIRCLE OF DESIRE, I was channeling Michael, the dangerous über spy from Nikita. His soft spoken, yet deadly voice always sent delicious chills down my back to my … uh, I made sure to listen to hear every word he said. I wanted my book to have those layers of danger and sexiness filling every page.

Renaissance Men

One thing that’s been surprising about my book being published is the number of men who are willing to read it. It is a romance. So far I know of two men who have read it or they said they did. And a couple others are claiming to be reading it or plan to read it. That’s cool.

No, I didn’t ask them about the hot scenes. Funny thing is I like hearing what the women think about them. Usually, that consists of “Oh, wow! That was hot!” But I would be a little uncomfortable discussing any aspect of those scenes with a man, except for my husband. Now if I could get him to read it (NOT!), I’d gladly talk about them.

The Talented Margie Lawson

I'm over at Margie Lawson's Writing Blog today. She had some interesting things to say about my book.  And we talked about what I learned from her workshop in July.  Come over and comment.  I'll be giving away two books.

First Book Signing

November 5, 2011 was my RWA chapter's Romance Readers Luncheon. We have it every year for the last seven years. This year's was the best. First because Lisa Dunick was the chairperson. She has a fantastic mind, very creative. Second because we have an energetic president, Heather Leonard, also with a creative mind. Put those two people together and you have magic.

Then, third, we had the marvelous Victoria Dahl! The woman is kind, generous and so funny.  Fourth, the darling of Southern Magic (my RWA chapter), Jennifer Echols. We all love her so much. If you love YA books, you've got to read hers. They're wonderfully funny and filled with YA smoldering sexuality.

And, fifth and the biggy for me, it was my first book signing!  I had the pleasure of sharing a book signing table with another debut author, Deborah Kaufman. So cool. We had a lot of fun.  If you're wondering, I'm on the left.

At my author table (where we listen to the speakers and ate lunch) I had my four sister-in-laws and my two beautiful daughters along with my buddy, JoAnn.

Friday - Next To Last Day For Blog Tour

Today, you can find me at http://blameitonthemuse.com/.  Like I've mentioned before, each blog is a little different so you will learn something new either about me or my book.  So I hope to see you there.

By the way, my editor said there was a glitch and books are available. YAY!
