Still On A Medium Kick

I can't believe yesterday I didn't mention Allison's husband, Joe. Gorgeous and all that hair. Plus I love the relationship the characters have on the show. Closer to real than any on TV. They argue, makeup, help each other, get mad, makeup, celebrate...

So many good aspects to this series.

Medium

Eeek! How upset was I to learn I had missed one of my favorite shows? Much. But luckily, I remembered tonight and two other episodes are on http://www.nbc.com/. Whew! Yet I'm missing five others. Hmmm. Wonder if YouTube has them. I sure hope so.

Little Leftover Habits

While writing this morning, I realized I still click on Save whenever I pause in my writing. That could be at the end of one or ten sentences. The habit was from the days of older computers and using WordPerfect. WordPerfect or the old computer would hang up and I would lose whatever I had written at the time. That could mean a sentence to two-three pages. The horror!

Though I have a new computer and use Word, I still worry it will happen again. Thus, Save, Save, Save.

What Do You Say...Part Two

Last year I blogged about how hard it was to explain to someone, in that case an ex-coworker, why I wasn't published yet. Click here to read that blog. Well, what's worse is explaining to your husband why you spent the money on a conference though I'm still not published. All I can say is at least I'm not spending it at bars looking for a boyfriend. LOL!

Bloodsuckers

I was reading in Entertainment Weekly since TWILIGHT became popular that anything connected with it has a huge chance of being as successful. In fact, Hollywood has noticed and will be producing several vampire and sci-fi movies.

To me this is so funny. I wanted more vampire movies for years, even going as far as writing several books with vampires as the main characters. My first vampire book was completed in 2001. Of course as my friends know, those books haven't sold. Then through the pre-published grapevine we heard editors won't buy vampire books unless it's something unusual. Well, I love the mainstream vampire story to a certain degree. Think THE KINDRED tv series and the most recent cancelled MOONLIGHT.

So when I read TWILIGHT three years ago, I thought "Okay book. My teenager might like it." Then fast forward two years later and everyone is going crazy over it. And the only thing different about it was that they were teenagers. Think LOST BOYS - loved that movie.

Okay. What I'm getting to is I'm so over vampires. Sure I might buy a book or two, but they're no longer an automatic buy. Read between the lines...1) I've been disappointed too many times and 2) my books are better. LOL! Sound conceited but it isn't. I had written the type of books I loved to read.

What am I writing now? Contemporary spy thriller books and loving it. Hopefully it will sell and start a new trend. [added: Then again, I still would love to write paranormal. Whatever sells!]
:-)
(Oh, for my Thankful Friday moment...I'm thankful my critique partners and my critique readers LOVED my newest book. The readers even rated it a 10! I swear they're honest. That's why I get them to help me. If you wondering, a critique reader is a person who doesn't write or want to be published, but loves to read. They look at it in a totally different way then a critique partner, one who is a writer.)

Counting Down

I'm counting down the days until the big RWA National Conference in DC. Last time I went to a National conference I had high expectations and quickly realized it wasn't going to happen like I had thought. No. I rather not go into it. That would be showing how green I was then.

Anyway, this time I plan on going to a few workshops (only got to one last time), do some sightseeing, and meet friends. No pressures. No expectations of the publishing kind. Yes. It should be good time. Hopefully I'll even meet some new friends.

And, oh, I won in Scrabble again today. LOL!

Ain't That Dandy?

Nearly everyday I play Scrabble with friends during lunch, and today I won! Not that I don't win on occasion, but today I won big. In fact, on my last play I used all seven tiles -- if you play, you know that's some BIG points. It was so cool. Of course, you're thinking, "Carla, you play everyday. Don't you win a lot?" Well, being a writer, you would've thought I would. But no. LOL!

Hope You're Writing

I was checking out a few authors' websites and came a handful that were so old. It was so sad to see the author didn't update their site in four months to four years. Yes. F O U R Y E A R S! It was so, so sad.

Sure everyone is busy, but please take one day out of the month to update your website. If a website is too hard or expensive. Then use a blog as a website. Really easy folks and there are people out in the world who are interested in your newest books. Or at the least the one you're writing.

Traffic Habits

I'm always amazed at the number of people who drive in the far left lane and drive slower than the other lanes. The left lane isn't called the passing lane because people will pass YOU!

Had to fuss.

Love The One You're With

Isn't it strange how you can write a wonderful book and you say "This is the one that'll get me published!" You send your grown up baby out into the cruel world and get rejections or worse, no response. While your other baby is out there begging for attention, you start on a new baby and before you know it, you're saying "This is the one!"

Thank goodness. It proves I'm getting better. I think.

What the hey?

What's going on? My blog's been receiving a lot of hits because of my Lucille Ball comment last year. Too funny. Her too.

Ole! Si, Si

I have a CD of Spanish guitar music and love it! Check out this video. The music is beautiful.

And a video from one of my favorite movies.

And of course, I'm thankful for Antonio Banderas! LOL!

YA All Grown Up

Check out this book. A beautiful book with a gorgeous, hot hero. I started reading yesterday evening and all I could think of on the way home today was that I couldn't wait to read more. It's in first person but artfully written so you know what all of the characters are thinking and feeling.

Ode To Duct Tape

On the way home, I passed a semi and on the cab was a big square of duct tape. Somehow a corner near the door had been cracked/wrecked and the driver repaired it cheapy as possible. I couldn't help laughing. Guys use it for everything.

I believe I heard it called man's best friend on Home Improvement. Thought it was dogs, didn't you? In fact, it was on that show Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor make it clear to his wife it was pronounced "Duct" not "Duck". I bet before I watched that episode I said Duck Tape. Funny the things we mispronounce and not realize it.

Doing Research

Several years ago, when I first started writing with thoughts of publication, I would purchase books on anything I didn't know, such as writing, history especially the Middle Ages, police procedures, poisons, interrogation, etc. I still use several of the books but mostly I Google whatever I want to know and go for it. I do know that not everything you read on the internet is correct, but it's amazing what you can find.

One of my favorite type of websites is the chat rooms for police officers. They talk about everything you can imagine.

Great and Easy Recipe

I'm a lousy cook. Partly because I find cooking boring, like almost everything except reading and writing. But I'm a sucker for buy-one-and-get-second-one-free deals and my grocery store had Pepperidge Farm Puffy Pastry on sale. It had been in my freezer for about a month when I decided to look up recipes on-line. Of course, the best place to look was on their website. I love apples done everyway you can imagine. So I looked for an apple pie recipe. Oh, I found one all right and it's SO EASY! Click here and check it out. I use canned apples prepared especially for apple pies.

Thankful Friday on Saturday

It's too funny how I keep forgetting my Thankful Friday posts. Well, Saturday is better than never.

I still struggle with keeping a positive outlook on...I started to say "my writing" but that's not totally accurate. It's a struggle with keeping a positive outlook on the WHOLE writing process. The submitting to agents, and waiting. The submitting to editors, and waiting. The entering of contests, and waiting. Writing and writing and taking forever to complete. I'm such a slow writer. Sure I wrote three books last year but that was a fluke. And to be honest with myself, I was three chapters in two before completing them. Two will most likely be my tops until I can write full time. But I'm thankful I had the time and resources to complete that many. And thankful I've learned something new about my writing with each one.

Oh, of course, I'm thankful I've learned how to be patient.

What's Your Email Address?

I agree with Raelene Gorlinsky at Ellora's Cave. It's amazing the email addresses I see that are so unprofessional. What was really amazing is that people actually give them to editors (and probably agents) expecting to be taken seriously.

Click here to read her blog.

Lines From My Latest

The first line: Olivia typed the ammunition data into the keypad on her sniper rifle and then nestled her cheek against the stock’s custom-fit pad, waiting for the information to be processed and her target to come into view.

The last line I've written so far with many more to go: “I’m going to kill the son of a bitch,” Olivia muttered as she sauntered back to the couch with apple martini in hand held high.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Today's my dad's birthday. He had heart surgery yesterday and they let him go home today. Amazing! He did great and they believe with one more procedure, he'll be doing even better.

Time Change

I hate this time change. Now when I get out of bed in the mornings, it will be dark. I feel sorry for the poor kids who have to get on the school bus in the dark too.

[add] This is so not a positive post. Okay...let's see if I can think something positive about the time change...hmm...it's daylight all the way home after work. There. LOL!

Home Improvement

Getting my nightly dose of HOME IMPROVEMENT. It's the 90's family friendly sitcom. It's one of the few sitcoms to show a married couple who actually act like they love each other, faults and all.

Thankful Friday

Considering the lay offs everywhere, I'm thankful I still have a day job and everyone in my family still has one.

Rehashing A Fun Blog

I blogged over at Romance Magicians today. Actually, it's a blog I did here about a week ago, but I added a clip. The clip is for those of you who are not familiar with how NASCAR drivers mention sponsors in a stream or how they change their hats several times during the interview. The reason they change hats (I've been told) is so pictures can be taken with each one and the sponsor can use if needed. Plus once again it advertises their sponsor "free" on national television. Just so American. LOL!

Did You Know...

Did you know when you Google or search a word or saying and then click on a website, people can see what interested you enough to come to their website or blog? Along with city, state/country, time and server.

The little counter you find at the bottom of some websites and blogs (like mine) not only tell you how many people have visited, but also how they got there. For example on my writing group's blog, after I blogged about an author doing an on-line paranormal workshop about gargoyles, the site had a massive amount of hits with people searching the word "gargoyles."

I have no idea what the big interest is, but I thought it interesting and a little freaky.

So this is sort of a test. Now that I've included that word in my post and the labels, let's see how many extra hits I get. LOL! I'm wicked and I know it.

Book Reviews

I hadn't planned to do book reviews, but I've done two so far because I enjoyed them so much and couldn't hold in my excitement. So I've decided, what the heck? Of course, you might as well know I will only mention those I really enjoyed. Thinking positive has a lot to do with what you talk about. In case you're not sure what I mean, if I read a book that I consider to be a disappointment, it will not be mentioned here no matter if the author is a friend or not.

How Much Is Too Much?

I've been enjoying Victoria Dahl's TALK ME DOWN so much. It's funny, sexy, hot, and even more important the characters have heart. There is one scene in the book where the heroine wakes up after having wonderful sex to artfully done pictures of her body parts (no none of the private ones). Vicki did a great job writing that scene. I almost cried from the beauty and sweetness of it.

I have laughed so much and I've enjoyed the way they can't quit thinking about each other in every way. It makes me remember how my husband and I were when we were dating. Heavens, we're still that way and we've been married thirty-five years. So if anyone has a problem with the way the two characters are horny for each other, they need to get some-some because obvious they haven't in a very, very long time.

Buy the book and you'll see what I mean. You won't regret it.

It Won't Last Long

I guess everyone in Alabama will be posting pictures like this, but I couldn't resist. We rarely get snow as you can imagine.
