Still On A Medium Kick

I can't believe yesterday I didn't mention Allison's husband, Joe. Gorgeous and all that hair. Plus I love the relationship the characters have on the show. Closer to real than any on TV. They argue, makeup, help each other, get mad, makeup, celebrate...

So many good aspects to this series.

Medium

Eeek! How upset was I to learn I had missed one of my favorite shows? Much. But luckily, I remembered tonight and two other episodes are on http://www.nbc.com/. Whew! Yet I'm missing five others. Hmmm. Wonder if YouTube has them. I sure hope so.

Little Leftover Habits

While writing this morning, I realized I still click on Save whenever I pause in my writing. That could be at the end of one or ten sentences. The habit was from the days of older computers and using WordPerfect. WordPerfect or the old computer would hang up and I would lose whatever I had written at the time. That could mean a sentence to two-three pages. The horror!

Though I have a new computer and use Word, I still worry it will happen again. Thus, Save, Save, Save.

What Do You Say...Part Two

Last year I blogged about how hard it was to explain to someone, in that case an ex-coworker, why I wasn't published yet. Click here to read that blog. Well, what's worse is explaining to your husband why you spent the money on a conference though I'm still not published. All I can say is at least I'm not spending it at bars looking for a boyfriend. LOL!

Bloodsuckers

I was reading in Entertainment Weekly since TWILIGHT became popular that anything connected with it has a huge chance of being as successful. In fact, Hollywood has noticed and will be producing several vampire and sci-fi movies.

To me this is so funny. I wanted more vampire movies for years, even going as far as writing several books with vampires as the main characters. My first vampire book was completed in 2001. Of course as my friends know, those books haven't sold. Then through the pre-published grapevine we heard editors won't buy vampire books unless it's something unusual. Well, I love the mainstream vampire story to a certain degree. Think THE KINDRED tv series and the most recent cancelled MOONLIGHT.

So when I read TWILIGHT three years ago, I thought "Okay book. My teenager might like it." Then fast forward two years later and everyone is going crazy over it. And the only thing different about it was that they were teenagers. Think LOST BOYS - loved that movie.

Okay. What I'm getting to is I'm so over vampires. Sure I might buy a book or two, but they're no longer an automatic buy. Read between the lines...1) I've been disappointed too many times and 2) my books are better. LOL! Sound conceited but it isn't. I had written the type of books I loved to read.

What am I writing now? Contemporary spy thriller books and loving it. Hopefully it will sell and start a new trend. [added: Then again, I still would love to write paranormal. Whatever sells!]

(Oh, for my Thankful Friday moment...I'm thankful my critique partners and my critique readers LOVED my newest book. The readers even rated it a 10! I swear they're honest. That's why I get them to help me. If you wondering, a critique reader is a person who doesn't write or want to be published, but loves to read. They look at it in a totally different way then a critique partner, one who is a writer.)

Counting Down

I'm counting down the days until the big RWA National Conference in DC. Last time I went to a National conference I had high expectations and quickly realized it wasn't going to happen like I had thought. No. I rather not go into it. That would be showing how green I was then.

Anyway, this time I plan on going to a few workshops (only got to one last time), do some sightseeing, and meet friends. No pressures. No expectations of the publishing kind. Yes. It should be good time. Hopefully I'll even meet some new friends.

And, oh, I won in Scrabble again today. LOL!

Ain't That Dandy?

Nearly everyday I play Scrabble with friends during lunch, and today I won! Not that I don't win on occasion, but today I won big. In fact, on my last play I used all seven tiles -- if you play, you know that's some BIG points. It was so cool. Of course, you're thinking, "Carla, you play everyday. Don't you win a lot?" Well, being a writer, you would've thought I would. But no. LOL!

Hope You're Writing

I was checking out a few authors' websites and came a handful that were so old. It was so sad to see the author didn't update their site in four months to four years. Yes. F O U R Y E A R S! It was so, so sad.

Sure everyone is busy, but please take one day out of the month to update your website. If a website is too hard or expensive. Then use a blog as a website. Really easy folks and there are people out in the world who are interested in your newest books. Or at the least the one you're writing.

Traffic Habits

I'm always amazed at the number of people who drive in the far left lane and drive slower than the other lanes. The left lane isn't called the passing lane because people will pass YOU!

Love The One You're With

Isn't it strange how you can write a wonderful book and you say "This is the one that'll get me published!" You send your grown up baby out into the cruel world and get rejections or worse, no response. While your other baby is out there begging for attention, you start on a new baby and before you know it, you're saying "This is the one!"

Thank goodness. It proves I'm getting better. I think.
